When is fishing the best?
Our fly fishing season is "short but sweet." We fish for just three months, mid June through mid September. The fishing is always good; most of the time it's great to spectacular!
What rivers and lakes do you fish?
Primarily, the South Fork of the Flathead River and its tributaries and the Spotted Bear River. The South Fork, protected by the Wild and Scenic River Act, has been called Montana's most pristine and inaccessible river. Spotted Bear Ranch is the only lodge located directly on the banks of the South Fork, at the confluence of the Spotted Bear River.
What types of fish do you catch?
Wild and native Westslope Cutthroat trout - on dry flies! The South Fork has the unique distinction of being totally natural and pristine. It has never been stocked. We are also one of the few waters allowed to fish for the extraordinary bull trout, listed as a threatened species. To help preserve this special fishery, we minimize the handling of fish using proper catch-and-release fishing practices. Our guides are well trained in these techniques and will gladly assist you in carefully handling fish to get a memorable photo of your catch.
| What methods of fishing do you use?
|
We float and wade fish using comfortable inflatable rafts. We also hike and wade smaller streams and creeks. Your guide will work with you to determine what type of fishing you would like to experience during your trip.
How do I get my Montana non-resident fishing license?
We recommend purchasing your license online through Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks at least two weeks prior to your trip to allow time for your license to arrive in the mail. If you prefer, your license may also be purchased when you arrive in Montana. Check out our "What to Bring" section for more information on fishing licenses. You will also need a special catch card if you intend to fish for bull trout. We're happy to answer any questions about licensing and how to obtain the proper licenses.
How much does a non-resident fishing license cost?
For 2011, a non-resident fishing license is $10.00 for the conservation license, plus $15.00 for two consecutive days, $43.50 for 10 consecutive days, or $60.00 for the season. No licenses are required for ages 1 - 11 (with some limitations). Anglers ages 12 - 14 or over 62 will need the conservation license only.
Do you rent fishing gear?
We rent Orvis Fly Fishing equipment, including rods, reels, waders, and wading boots. Let your guide know what equipment you will need and we'll make sure you're properly outfitted. |
What activities are available for non-fishing guests and spouses?
All guests may take part in horseback riding, river rafting, swimming, hiking, picnics, photography excursions, or just plain relaxing. Our horseback riding is best described as western trail riding through the forest to scenic overlooks.
